Response surface methodology is typically used for mapping a response surface over a particular region of interest, optimizing the response or for selecting operating conditions to achieve target specifications. The present investigation aimed to optimize the time, temperature and sucrose concentration for osmo-dehydration of carrots slices to maximize water loss, solute gain, dehydration efficiency, minimum water activity and texture values. The experimental design was found to be significant in terms of p-values less than 0.0500. Numerical optimization showed that 37.53°C temperature, 6.9 hours time, 61.6°B sucrose concentration gives the best responses as 66 per cent water loss, 16.8 per cent solute gain, 3.8 DE, 0.49 aW and 44.40 N texture.Keywords

The present study was conducted to optimize the food materials such as Dehulled Sunflower Meal (DSM) and Refined Wheat Flour (RWF) in flour blend for the preparation of muffins and to evaluate the storage stability of DSM incorporated muffins for 15 days storage at ambient as well as low temperature (4o C). Different experimental combinations were planned using response surface methodology (central composite design) of Design Expert software considering 10 to 40 g DSM and 60 to 90 g RWF. Different levels of RWF and DSM significantly influenced the instrumental colour (L, a, b values), nutritional quality, textural profile analysis and sensory acceptability of muffins. The nutritional and baking quality such as crude protein, total mineral content, iron and calcium, weight loss and height of baked muffins increased with increasing quantity of DSM. Optimized level of RWF and DSM consisted of 63.46 and 36.54%, respectively in flour blend showing overall desirability as 0.831. This muffin sample provided 11.72% crude protein, 2.24% total minerals, 143 mg/100g calcium and 4.55 mg/100 g iron with an overall acceptability score of 7.9 and can be stored for 9 days with good sensory acceptability.

The potential of a radio-sterilized host, Spodoptera litura (Fabr.), an established noctuid pest, was ascertained for in vivo transport of the viable entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs), Steinernema thermophilum. Radio-sterilization (70 Gy) of the host (pest) was done to avoid any pest population build-up from the host larvae that could inadvertently miss EPN infection. The infective juveniles (IJs) derived from a radio-sterilized host took 67.3 h to induce host mortality, 132 h for incubation, and showed 87.8% parasitization with 98.9 IJs har-vesting per mg host body wt, indicating almost similar parasitizing behaviour of these IJs as control. The findings indicated the suitability of the radio-sterilized host, S. litura, for carrying the IJs (in vivo) in a safe mode, that could retain a substantial degree of infecti-vity to be utilized in the field for managing this serious noctuid pest using biocontrol measures.Keywords
